1(49) For the end, a Psalm for the sons of Core. Hear these words, all you⌃ nations, listen, all you⌃ that dwell upon the earth:
1For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by the sons of Korah. Hear this, all you peoples. Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,
2both the sons of mean men, and sons of [great] men; the rich and poor [man] together.
2both low and high, rich and poor together.
3My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall bring [forth] understanding.
3My mouth will speak words of wisdom. My heart will utter understanding.
4I will incline my ear to a parable: I will open my riddle on the harp.
4I will incline my ear to a proverb. I will solve my riddle on the harp.
5Therefore should I fear in the evil day? the iniquity of my heel shall compass me.
5Why should I fear in the days of evil, when iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
6They that trust in their strength, and boast themselves in the multitude of their wealth—
6Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches—
7A brother does not redeem , shall a man redeem? he shall not give to God a ransom for himself,
7none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him.
8or the price of the redemption of his soul, though he labor for ever ,
8For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough,
9and live to the end, [so] that he should not see corruption.
9that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption.
10When he shall see wise men dying, the fool and the senseless one shall perish together; and they shall leave their wealth to strangers.
10For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.
11And their sepulchres are their houses for ever, [even] their tabernacles to all generations: they have called their lands after their own names.
11Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.
12And man being in honor, understands not: he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like to them.
12But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish.
13This their way is an offense to them: yet afterwards men will commend their sayings. Pause.
13This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.
14They have laid [them] as sheep in Hades; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their help shall fail in Hades from their glory.
14They are appointed as a flock for Sheol. Death shall be their shepherd. The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning. Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, far from their mansion.
15But God shall deliver my soul from the power of Hades, when he shall receive me. Pause.
15But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. Selah.
16Fear not when a man is enriched, and when the glory of his house is increased.
16Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
17For he shall take nothing when he dies; neither shall his glory descend with him.
17for when he dies he will carry nothing away. His glory won’t descend after him.
18For his soul shall be blessed in his life: he shall give thanks to you when you do well to him.
18Though while he lived he blessed his soul— and men praise you when you do well for yourself—
19[Yet] he shall go in to the generation of his fathers; he shall never see light.
19he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.
20Man that is in honor, understands not: he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is like them.
20A man who has riches without understanding, is like the animals that perish.
