1(89) [A Psalm] of instruction for Aetham the Israelite. I will sing of your mercies, O Lord, for ever: I will declare your truth with my mouth to all generations.
1A contemplation by Ethan, the Ezrahite. I will sing of the loving kindness of Yahweh forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
2For you have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: your truth shall be established in the heavens.
2I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”
3I made a covenant with my chosen ones, I swore to Davidmy servant.
3“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant,
4I will establish your seed for ever, and build up your throne to all generations. Pause.
4‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’” Selah.
5The heavens shall declare your wonders, O Lord; and your truth in the assembly of the saints.
5The heavens will praise your wonders, Yahweh, your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
6For who in the heavens shall be compared to the Lord? and who shall be likened to the Lord among the sons of God?
6For who in the skies can be compared to Yahweh? Who among the sons of the heavenly beings is like Yahweh,
7God is glorified in the council of the saints; great and terrible toward all that are round about him.
7a very awesome God in the council of the holy ones, to be feared above all those who are around him?
8O Lord God of hosts, who is like to you? you are mighty, O Lord, and your truth is round about you.
8Yahweh, God of Armies, who is a mighty one, like you? Yah, your faithfulness is around you.
9You rule the power of the sea; and you calm the tumult of its waves .
9You rule the pride of the sea. When its waves rise up, you calm them.
10You have brought down the proud as one that is slain; and with the arm of your power you have scattered your enemies .
10You have broken Rahab in pieces, like one of the slain. You have scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
11The heavens are your, and the earth is your: you have founded the world, and the fullness of it.
11The heavens are yours. The earth also is yours, the world and its fullness. You have founded them.
12You have created the north and the west: Thabor and Hermon shall rejoice in your name.
12You have created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name.
13Your is the mighty arm: let your hand be strengthened, let your right hand be exalted.
13You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.
14Justice and judgment are the establishment of your throne: mercy and truth shall go before your face.
14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.
15Blessed is the people that knows the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance.
15Blessed are the people who learn to acclaim you. They walk in the light of your presence, Yahweh.
16And in your name shall they rejoice all the day: and in your righteousness shall they be exalted.
16In your name they rejoice all day. In your righteousness, they are exalted.
17For you are the boast of their strength; and in your good pleasure shall our horn be exalted,
17For you are the glory of their strength. In your favor, our horn will be exalted.
18for [our] help is of the Lord; and of the Holy One of Israel, our king.
18For our shield belongs to Yahweh, our king to the Holy One of Israel.
19Then you spoke in vision to your children, and said, I have laid help on a mighty one; I have exalted one chosen out of my people.
19Then you spoke in vision to your saints, and said, “I have given strength to the warrior. I have exalted a young man from the people.
20I have found Davidmy servant; I have anointed him by [my] holy mercy.
20I have found David, my servant. I have anointed him with my holy oil,
21For my hand shall support him; and my arm shall strengthen him.
21with whom my hand shall be established. My arm will also strengthen him.
22The enemy shall have no advantage against him; and the son of transgression shall not hurt him again.
22No enemy will tax him. No wicked man will oppress him.
23And I will hew down his foes before him, and put to flight those that hate him.
23I will beat down his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him.
24But my truth and my mercy shall be with him; and in my name shall his horn be exalted.
24But my faithfulness and my loving kindness will be with him. In my name, his horn will be exalted.
25And I will set his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
25I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers.
26He shall call upon me, [saying], You are my Father, my God, and the helper of my salvation.
26He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation!’
27And I will make him [my] firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
27I will also appoint him my firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
28I will keep my mercy for him for ever, and my covenant [shall be] firm with him.
28I will keep my loving kindness for him forever more. My covenant will stand firm with him.
29And I will establish his seed for ever and ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
29I will also make his offspring endure forever, and his throne as the days of heaven.
30If his children should forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;
30If his children forsake my law, and don’t walk in my ordinances;
31if they should profane my ordinances, and not keep my commandments;
31if they break my statutes, and don’t keep my commandments;
32I will visit their transgressions with a rod, and their sins with scourges.
32then I will punish their sin with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.
33But my mercy I will not utterly remove from him, nor wrong my truth.
33But I will not completely take my loving kindness from him, nor allow my faithfulness to fail.
34Neither will I by any means profane my covenant; and I will not make void the things that proceed out of my lips .
34I will not break my covenant, nor alter what my lips have uttered.
35Once have I sworn by my holiness, that I will not lie to David.
35Once I have sworn by my holiness, I will not lie to David.
36His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me;
36His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.
37and as the moon [that is] established for ever, and as the faithful witness in heaven. Pause.
37It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah.
38But you have cast off and set at nothing, you have rejected your anointed.
38But you have rejected and spurned. You have been angry with your anointed.
39You have overthrown the covenant of your servant; you have profaned his sanctuary, [casting it] to the ground.
39You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust.
40You have broken down all his hedges; you have made his strong holds a terror.
40You have broken down all his hedges. You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
41All that go by the way have spoiled him: he is become a reproach to his neighbors.
41All who pass by the way rob him. He has become a reproach to his neighbors.
42You have exalted the right hand of his enemies; you have made all his enemies to rejoice.
42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice.
43You have turned back the help of his sword, and have not helped him in the battle.
43Yes, you turn back the edge of his sword, and haven’t supported him in battle.
44You have deprived him of glory: you have broken down his throne to the ground.
44You have ended his splendor, and thrown his throne down to the ground.
45You have shortened the days of his throne: you have poured shame upon him . Pause.
45You have shortened the days of his youth. You have covered him with shame. Selah.
46How long, O Lord, will you turn away, for ever? shall your anger flame out as fire?
46How long, Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire?
47Remember what my being is: for have you created all the sons of men in vain?
47Remember how short my time is, for what vanity you have created all the children of men!
48What man is there who shall live, and not see death? shall [any one] deliver his soul from the hand of Hades? Pause.
48What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah.
49Where are your ancient mercies, O Lord, which you swore to David in your truth?
49Lord, where are your former loving kindnesses, which you swore to David in your faithfulness?
50Remember, O Lord, the reproach of your servants, which I have borne in my bosom, [even the reproach] of many nations;
50Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,
51wherewith your enemies have reviled, O Lord: wherewith they have reviled the recompense of your anointed .
51With which your enemies have mocked, Yahweh, with which they have mocked the footsteps of your anointed one.
52Blessed be the Lord for ever. So be it, so be it.
52Blessed be Yahweh forever more. Amen, and Amen.
