1For the end, a Psalm of David, concerning the secrets of the Son.I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will recount all your wonderful works.
1For the Chief Musician. Set to “The Death of the Son.” A Psalm by David. I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart. I will tell of all your marvelous works.
2I will be glad and exult in you: I will sing to your name, O you Most High.
2I will be glad and rejoice in you. I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3When my enemies are turned back, they shall be feeble and perish at your presence.
3When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish in your presence.
4For you have maintained my cause and my right; you sat on the throne, that judge righteousness.
4For you have maintained my just cause. You sit on the throne judging righteously.
5You have rebuked the nations, and the ungodly one has perished; you have blotted out their name for ever, even for ever and ever.
5You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6The swords of the enemy have failed utterly; and you have destroyed cities: their memorial has been destroyed with a noise,
6The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin. The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.
7but the Lord endures for ever: he has prepared his throne for judgment.
7But Yahweh reigns forever. He has prepared his throne for judgment.
8And he will judge the world in righteousness, he will judge the nations in uprightness.
8He will judge the world in righteousness. He will administer judgment to the peoples in uprightness.
9The Lord also is become a refuge for the poor, a seasonable help, in affliction.
9Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble.
10And let them that know your name hope in you: for you, O Lord, have not failed them that diligently seek you.
10Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, Yahweh, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Sion: declare his dealings among the nations.
11Sing praises to Yahweh, who dwells in Zion, and declare among the people what he has done.
12For he remembered them, [in] making inquisition for blood: he has not forgotten the supplication of the poor.
12For he who avenges blood remembers them. He doesn’t forget the cry of the afflicted.
13Have mercy upon me, O Lord; look upon my affliction [which I suffer] of my enemies, you that lift me up from the gates of death:
13Have mercy on me, Yahweh. See my affliction by those who hate me, and lift me up from the gates of death,
14that I may declare all your praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion: I will exult in your salvation.
14that I may show all of your praise. I will rejoice in your salvation in the gates of the daughter of Zion.
15The heathen are caught in the destruction which they planned: in the very snare which they hid is their foot taken.
15The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made. In the net which they hid, their own foot is taken.
16The Lord is known as executing judgments: the sinner is taken in the works of his hands. A song of Pause.
16Yahweh has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah.
17Let sinners be driven away into Hades, [even] all the nations that forget God.
17The wicked shall be turned back to Sheol, even all the nations that forget God.
18For the poor shall not be forgotten for ever: the patience of the needy ones shall not perish for ever.
18For the needy shall not always be forgotten, nor the hope of the poor perish forever.
19Arise, O Lord, let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged before you.
19Arise, Yahweh! Don’t let man prevail. Let the nations be judged in your sight.
20Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver over them: let the heathen know that they are men. Pause. (Psalm 9a)
20Put them in fear, Yahweh. Let the nations know that they are only men. Selah.
21Why stand you afar off, O Lord? [why] do you overlook [us] in times of need, in affliction?
21Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
22While the ungodly one acts proudly, the poor is hotly pursued: [the wicked] are taken in the crafty counsels which they imagine.
22In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.
23Because the sinner praises himself for the desires of his heart; and the unjust one blesses himself.
23For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy and condemns Yahweh.
24The sinner has provoked the Lord: according to the abundance of his pride he will not seek after [him]: God is not before him.
24The wicked, in the pride of his face, has no room in his thoughts for God.
25His ways are profane at all times; your judgments are removed from before him: he will gain the mastery over all his enemies.
25His ways are prosperous at all times. He is arrogant, and your laws are far from his sight. As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them.
26For he has said in his heart, I shall not be moved, [continuing] without evil from generation to generation.
26He says in his heart, “I shall not be shaken. For generations I shall have no trouble.”
27Whose mouth is full of cursing, and bitterness, and fraud: under his tongue are trouble and pain.
27His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression. Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
28He lies in wait with rich [men] in secret places, in order to kill the innocent: his eyes are set against the poor.
28He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless.
29He lies in wait in secret as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to ravish the poor, to ravish the poor when he draws him [after him]: he will bring him down in his snare.
29He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net.
30He will bow down and fall when he has mastered the poor.
30The helpless are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength.
31For he has said in his heart, God has forgotten: he has turned away his face so as never to look.
31He says in his heart, “God has forgotten. He hides his face. He will never see it.”
32Arise, O Lord God; let your hand be lifted up: forget not the poor.
32Arise, Yahweh! God, lift up your hand! Don’t forget the helpless.
33Therefore, has the wicked provoked God? for he has said in his heart, He will not require [it].
33Why does the wicked person condemn God, and say in his heart, “God won’t call me into account”?
34You see [it]; for you do observe trouble and wrath, to deliver them into your hands: the poor has been left to you; you were a helper to the orphan.
34But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.
35Break you the arm of the sinner and wicked man: his sin shall be sought for , and shall not be found.
35Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.
36The Lord shall reign for ever, even for ever and ever: you⌃ Gentiles shall perish out his land.
36Yahweh is King forever and ever! The nations will perish out of his land.
37The Lord has heard the desire of the poor: your ear has inclined to the preparation of their heart;
37Yahweh, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear,
38to plead for the orphan and afflicted, that man may no more boast upon the earth.
38to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.
