1And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of the Lord. And the Lord said, [There is] guilt upon Sauland his house because of his bloody murder, whereby he slew the Gabaonites.
1There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Yahweh. Yahweh said, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
2And king David called the Gabaonites, and said to them ;—(now the Gabaonites are not the children of Israel, but [are] of the remnant of the Amorite, and the children of Israel had sworn to them: but Saul sought to smite them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Juda.)
2The king called the Gibeonites and said to them (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites, and the children of Israel had sworn to them; and Saul sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah);
3And David said to the Gabaonites, What shall I do to you? and wherewithal shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord?
3and David said to the Gibeonites, “What should I do for you? And with what should I make atonement, that you may bless Yahweh’s inheritance?”
4And the Gabaonites said to him, We have no [question about] silver or gold with Saul and with his house; and there is no man for us to put to death in Israel.
4The Gibeonites said to him, “It is no matter of silver or gold between us and Saul or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.” He said, “I will do for you whatever you say.”
5And he said, What say ye? speak, and I will do it for you. And they said to the king, The man who would have made an end of us, and persecuted us, who plotted against us to destroy us, let us utterly destroy him, so that he shall have no standing in all the coasts of Israel.
5They said to the king, “The man who consumed us and who plotted against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,
6Let one give us seven men of his sons , and let us hang them up in the sun to the Lord in Gabaon of Saul, as chosen out for the Lord. And the king said, I will give [them].
6let seven men of his sons be delivered to us, and we will hang them up to Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Yahweh.” The king said, “I will give them.”
7But the king spared Memphibosthe son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the oath of the Lord that was between them, even between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
7But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Yahweh’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
8And the king took the two sons of Respha the daughter of Aia, whom she bore to Saul, Hermonoi and Memphibosthe, and the five sons of Michol daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Esdriel son of Berzelli the Moülathite.
8But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
9And he gave them into the hand of the Gabaonites, and they hanged them up to the sun in the mountain before the Lord: and they fell, even the seven together: moreover they were put to death in the days of harvest at the commencement, in the beginning of barley -harvest.
9He delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites; and they hanged them on the mountain before Yahweh, and all seven of them fell together. They were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.
10And Respha the daughter of Aia took sackcloth, and fixed it for herself on the rock in the beginning of barley harvest, until water dropped upon them out of heaven: and she did not suffer the birds of the air to rest upon them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
10Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water poured on them from the sky. She allowed neither the birds of the sky to rest on them by day, nor the animals of the field by night.
11And it was told David what Respha the daughter of Aia the concubine of Saulhad done, [and they were faint, and Dan the son of Joa of the offspring of the giants overtook them.]
11David was told what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
12And David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the men of the sons of Jabis Galaad, who stole them from the street of Bæthsan; for the Philistines set them there in the day in which the Philistines smote Saul in Gelbue.
12So David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hanged them in the day that the Philistines killed Saul in Gilboa;
13And he carried up thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and gathered the bones of them that had been hanged.
13and he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son. They also gathered the bones of those who were hanged.
14And they buried the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and the bones of them that had been hanged, in the land of Benjamin in the hill, in the sepulchre of Cis his father; and they did all things that the king commanded: and after this God hearkened to [the prayers of] the land.
14They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father; and they performed all that the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer for the land.
15And there was yet war between the Philistines and Israel: and David went downand his servants with him, and they fought with the Philistines, and David went.
15The Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines. David grew faint;
16And Jesbi, who was of the progeny of Rapha, and the head of whose spear [was] three hundred shekels of brass in weight, who also was girt with a club, even he thought to smite David.
16and Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of bronze in weight, he being armed with a new sword, thought he would kill David.
17And Abessa the son of Saruia helped himand smote the Philistine, and slew him. Then the men of David swore , saying, Thou shalt not any longer go out with us to battle , and thou shalt not quench the lamp of Israel.
17But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “Don’t go out with us to battle any more, so that you don’t quench the lamp of Israel.”
18And after thisthere was a battle again with the Philistines in Geth: then Sebocha the Astatothite slew Seph of the progeny of Rapha.
18After this, there was again war with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was of the sons of the giant.
19And there was a battle in Rom with the Philistines; and Eleanan son of Ariorgim the Bethleemite slew Goliath the Gittite; and the staff of his spear [was] as a weaver's beam.
19There was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite’s brother, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
20And there was yet a battle in Geth: and there was a man of stature, and the fingers of his hands and the toes of his feet [were] six on each, four and twentyin number: and he also was born to Rapha.
20There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on every hand and six toes on every foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was born to the giant.
21And he defied Israel, and Jonathan son of Semei brother of David, smote him.
21When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David’s brother, killed him.
22These four were born descendants of the giants in Geth, the family of Rapha; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

2And the song was thus: O Lord, my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer,
2and he said: “Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine;
3my God; he shall be to me my guard, I will trust in him: [he is] my protector, and the horn of my salvation, my helper, and my sure refuge; thou shalt save me from the unjust man.
3God is my rock in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge. My savior, you save me from violence.
4I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I shall be saved from my enemies.
4I call on Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.
5For the troubles of death compassed me, the floods of iniquity amazed me:
5For the waves of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
6the pangs of death surrounded me, the agonies of death prevented me.
6The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death caught me.
7When I am afflicted I will call upon the Lord, and will cry to my God, and he shall hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry shall come into his ears.
7In my distress, I called on Yahweh. Yes, I called to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple. My cry came into his ears.
8And the earth was troubled and quaked, and the foundations of heaven were confounded and torn asunder, because the Lord was wroth with them.
8Then the earth shook and trembled. The foundations of heaven quaked and were shaken, because he was angry.
9There went up a smoke in his wrath, and fire out of his mouth devours: coals were kindled at it.
9Smoke went up out of his nostrils. Consuming fire came out of his mouth. Coals were kindled by it.
10And he bowed the heavens , and came down, and [there was] darkness under his feet.
10He bowed the heavens also, and came down. Thick darkness was under his feet.
11And he rode upon the cherubs and did fly, and was seen upon the wings of the wind.

12And he made darkness his hiding-place; his tabernacle round about him was the darkness of waters, he condensed it with the clouds of the air.
12He made darkness a shelter around himself, gathering of waters, and thick clouds of the skies.

16And the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his anger.

17He sent from above and took me; he drew me out of many waters.

18He delivered me from my strong enemies, from them that hated me, for they were stronger than I.
18He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
19The days of my affliction prevented me; but the Lord was my stay.
19They came on me in the day of my calamity, but Yahweh was my support.
20And he brought me into a wide place, and rescued me, because he delighted in me.
20He also brought me out into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
21And the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness; even according to the purity of my hands did he recompense me.
21Yahweh rewarded me according to my righteousness. He rewarded me according to the cleanness of my hands.
22Because I kept the ways of the Lord, and did not wickedly depart from my God.
22For I have kept Yahweh’s ways, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23For all his judgments and his ordinances [were] before me: I departed not from them.
23For all his ordinances were before me. As for his statutes, I didn’t depart from them.
24And I shall be blameless before him, and will keep myself from my iniquity.
24I was also perfect toward him. I kept myself from my iniquity.
25And the Lord will recompense me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hands in his eye-sight.
25Therefore Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in his eyesight.
26With the holy thou wilt be holy, and with the perfect man thou wilt be perfect,
26With the merciful you will show yourself merciful. With the perfect man you will show yourself perfect.
27and with the excellent thou wilt be excellent, and with the froward thou wilt be froward.
27With the pure you will show yourself pure. With the crooked you will show yourself shrewd.
28And thou wilt save the poor people, and wilt bring down the eyes of the haughty.
28You will save the afflicted people, but your eyes are on the arrogant, that you may bring them down.
29For thou, Lord, [art] my lamp, and the Lord shall shine forth to me in my darkness.
29For you are my lamp, Yahweh. Yahweh will light up my darkness.
30For by thee shall I run [as] a girded man, and by my God shall I leap over a wall.
30For by you, I run against a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
31As for the Mighty One, his way [is] blameless: the word of the Lord [is] strong [and] tried in the fire: he is a protector to all that put their trust in him.
31As for God, his way is perfect. Yahweh’s word is tested. He is a shield to all those who take refuge in him.
32Who [is] strong, but the Lord? and who will be a Creator except our God?
32For who is God, besides Yahweh? Who is a rock, besides our God?
33[It is] the Mighty One who strengthens me with might, and has prepared my way without fault.
33God is my strong fortress. He makes my way perfect.
34He makes my feet like harts' feet, and sets me upon the high places.
34He makes his feet like hinds’ feet, and sets me on my high places.
35He teaches my hands to war, and has broken a brazen bow by my arm.
35He teaches my hands to war, so that my arms bend a bow of bronze.
36And thou hast given me the shield of my salvation, and thy propitious dealing has increased me,
36You have also given me the shield of your salvation. Your gentleness has made me great.
37so as to make room under me for my going, and my legs did not totter.
37You have enlarged my steps under me. My feet have not slipped.
38I will pursue my enemies, and will utterly destroy them; and I will not turn again till I have consumed them.
38I have pursued my enemies and destroyed them. I didn’t turn again until they were consumed.
39And I will crush them, and they shall not rise; and they shall fall under my feet.
39I have consumed them, and struck them through, so that they can’t arise. Yes, they have fallen under my feet.
40And thou shalt strengthen me with power for the war; thou shalt cause them that rise up against me to bow down under me.
40For you have armed me with strength for the battle. You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
41And thou hast caused mine enemies to flee before me, even them that hated me, and thou hast slain them.
41You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, that I might cut off those who hate me.
42They shall cry, and there shall be no helper; to the Lord, but he hearkens not to them.
42They looked, but there was no one to save; even to Yahweh, but he didn’t answer them.
43And I ground them as the dust of the earth, I beat them small as the mire of the streets.
43Then I beat them as small as the dust of the earth. I crushed them as the mire of the streets, and spread them abroad.
44And thou shalt deliver me from the striving of the peoples, thou shalt keep me [to be] the head of the Gentiles: a people which I knew not served me.
44You also have delivered me from the strivings of my people. You have kept me to be the head of the nations. A people whom I have not known will serve me.
45The strange children feigned [obedience] to me; they hearkened to me as soon as they heard.
45The foreigners will submit themselves to me. As soon as they hear of me, they will obey me.
46The strange children shall be cast away, and shall be overthrown out of their hiding-places.
46The foreigners will fade away, and will come trembling out of their close places.
47The Lord lives, and blessed [be] my guardian, and my God, my strong keeper, shall be exalted.
47Yahweh lives! Blessed be my rock! Exalted be God, the rock of my salvation,
48The Lord who avenges me [is] strong, chastening the nations under me,
48even the God who executes vengeance for me, who brings down peoples under me,
49and bringing me out from my enemies: and thou shalt set me on high from among those that rise up against me: thou shalt deliver me from the violent man.
49who brings me away from my enemies. Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me. You deliver me from the violent man.
50Therefore will I confess to thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name.
50Therefore I will give thanks to you, Yahweh, among the nations, and will sing praises to your name.
51He magnifies the salvation of his king, and works mercy for his anointed, even for David and for his seed for ever.
51He gives great deliverance to his king, and shows loving kindness to his anointed, to David and to his offspring, forever more.”
