1Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Also, thou, son of man, say,
1Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
2Thus saith the Lord; An end is come to the land of Israel, the end is come on the four corners of the land.
2“You, son of man, the Lord Yahweh says to the land of Israel, ‘An end! The end has come on the four corners of the land.
3The end is come
3Now the end is on you, and I will send my anger on you, and will judge you according to your ways. I will bring on you all your abominations.
4on thee, the inhabitant of the land: the time is come, the day has drawn nigh, not with tumult, nor with pangs.
4My eye will not spare you, neither will I have pity; but I will bring your ways on you, and your abominations will be among you. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’
5Now I will pour out mine anger upon thee near at hand, and I will accomplish my wrath on thee: and I will judge thee for thy ways, and recompense upon thee all thine abominations.
5“The Lord Yahweh says: ‘A disaster! A unique disaster! Behold, it comes.
6Mine eye shall not spare, nor will I have any mercy: for I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord that smite [thee].
6An end has come. The end has come! It awakes against you. Behold, it comes.
7Now the end [is come] to thee, and I will send [judgment] upon thee: and I will take vengeance on thy ways, and will recompense all thine abominations upon thee.
7Your doom has come to you, inhabitant of the land! The time has come! The day is near, a day of tumult, and not of joyful shouting, on the mountains.
8Mine eye shall not spare, nor will I have any mercy: for I will recompense thy way upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
8Now I will shortly pour out my wrath on you, and accomplish my anger against you, and will judge you according to your ways. I will bring on you all your abominations.
9For thus saith the Lord; Behold, the end is come.
9My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways. Your abominations will be among you. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, strike.
10Behold, the day of the Lord! although the rod has blossomed,
10“‘Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom has gone out. The rod has blossomed. Pride has budded.
11pride has sprung up, and will break the staff of the wicked one, and [that] not with tumult, nor with haste.
11Violence has risen up into a rod of wickedness. None of them will remain, nor of their multitude, nor of their wealth. There will be nothing of value among them.
12The time is come, behold the day: let not the buyer rejoice, and let not the seller mourn.
12The time has come! The day draws near. Don’t let the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is on all its multitude.
13For the buyer shall never again return to the seller, neither shall a man cleave with the eye [of hope] to his life.
13For the seller won’t return to that which is sold, although they are still alive; for the vision concerns the whole multitude of it. None will return. None will strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life.
14Sound ye the trumpet, and pass sentence on all together.
14They have blown the trumpet, and have made all ready; but no one goes to the battle, for my wrath is on all its multitude.
15[There shall be] war with the sword without, and famine and pestilence within: he that is in the field shall die by the sword; and famine and pestilence shall destroy them that are in the city .
15“‘The sword is outside, and the pestilence and the famine within. He who is in the field will die by the sword. He who is in the city will be devoured by famine and pestilence.
16But they that escape of them shall be delivered, and shall be upon the mountains: and I will slay all [the rest], every one for his iniquities.
16But of those who escape, they will escape and will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, everyone in his iniquity.
17All hands shall be completely weakened, and all thighs shall be defiled with moisture.
17All hands will be feeble, and all knees will be weak as water.
18And they shall gird themselves with sackcloth, and amazement shall cover them; and shame shall be upon them, [even] upon every face, and baldness upon every head.
18They will also clothe themselves with sackcloth, and horror will cover them. Shame will be on all faces, and baldness on all their heads.
19Their silver shall be cast forth in the streets, and their gold shall be despised: their souls shall not be satisfied, and their bellies shall not be filled: for it was the punishment of their iniquities.
19They will cast their silver in the streets, and their gold will be as an unclean thing. Their silver and their gold won’t be able to deliver them in the day of Yahweh’s wrath. They won’t satisfy their souls or fill their bellies; because it has been the stumbling block of their iniquity.
20[As for] their choice ornaments, they employed them for pride, and they made of them images of their abominations: therefore have I made them uncleanness to them .
20As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty; but they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things therein. Therefore I have made it to them as an unclean thing.
21And I will deliver them into the hands of strangers to make them a prey, and to the pests of the earth for a spoil; and they shall profane them.
21I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a plunder; and they will profane it.
22And I will turn away my face from them, and they shall defile my charge, and shall go in to them unguardedly, and profane them.
22I will also turn my face from them, and they will profane my secret place. Robbers will enter into it, and profane it.
23And they shall work uncleanness: because the land is full of strange nations, and the city is full of iniquity.
23“‘Make chains, for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.
24And I will turn back the boasting of their strength; and their holy things shall be defiled.
24Therefore I will bring the worst of the nations, and they will possess their houses. I will also make the pride of the strong to cease. Their holy places will be profaned.
25And [though] propitiation shall come, and [one] shall seek peace, yet there shall be none.
25Destruction comes! They will seek peace, and there will be none.
26There shall be woe upon woe, and there shall be message upon message; and a vision shall be sought from a prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders.
26Mischief will come on mischief, and rumor will be on rumor. They will seek a vision of the prophet; but the law will perish from the priest, and counsel from the elders.
27The prince shall clothe himself with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be made feeble: I will do to them according to their ways, and according to their judgments will I punish them; and they shall know that I am the Lord.
27The king will mourn, and the prince will be clothed with desolation. The hands of the people of the land will be troubled. I will do to them after their way, and according to their own judgments I will judge them. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’”
1And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the fifth month, on the fifth [day] of the month, I was sitting in the house, and the elders of Juda were sitting before me: and the hand of the Lord came upon me .
1In the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in my house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, the Lord Yahweh’s hand fell on me there.
2And I looked, and, behold, the likeness of a man: from his loins and downwards [there was] fire, and from his loins upwards [there was] as the appearance of amber.
2Then I saw, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of fire—from the appearance of his waist and downward, fire, and from his waist and upward, as the appearance of brightness, as it were glowing metal.
3And he stretched forth the likeness of a hand, and took me up by the crown of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between the earth and sky, and brought me to Jerusalem in a vision of God , to the porch of the gate that looks to the north, where was the pillar of the Purchaser.
3He stretched out the form of a hand, and took me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and the sky, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the gate of the inner court that looks toward the north, where there was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy.
4And, behold, the glory of the Lord God of Israel was there, according to the vision which I saw in the plain.
4Behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the appearance that I saw in the plain.
5And he said to me, Son of man, lift up thine eyes toward the north. So I lifted up mine eyes toward the north, and , behold, [I looked] from the north toward the eastern gate .
5Then he said to me, Son of man, lift up your eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up my eyes the way toward the north, and saw, northward of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy in the entry.
6And he said to me, Son of man, hast thou seen what these do? They commit great abominations here so that I should keep away from my sanctuary: and thou shalt see yet greater iniquities.
6He said to me, Son of man, do you see what they do? Even the great abominations that the house of Israel commit here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? But you will again see yet other great abominations.
7And he brought me to the porch of the court.
7He brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall.
8And he said to me, Son of man, dig: so I dug , and behold a door.
8Then he said to me, Son of man, dig now in the wall.” When I had dug in the wall, I saw a door.
9And he said to me, Go in, and behold the iniquities which they practise here.
9He said to me, Go in, and see the wicked abominations that they do here.
10So I went in and looked; and beheld vain abominations, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon them round about.
10So I went in and looked, and saw every form of creeping things, abominable animals, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed around on the wall.
11And seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and Jechonias the son of Saphan stood in their presence in the midst of them , and each one held his censer in his hand; and the smoke of the incense went up.
11Seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel stood before them. In the middle of them Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan stood, every man with his censer in his hand; and the smell of the cloud of incense went up.
12And he said to me, Thou hast seen, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel do , each one of them in their secret chamber: because they have said, The Lord sees not; The Lord has forsaken the earth.
12Then he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in his rooms of imagery? For they say, ‘Yahweh doesn’t see us. Yahweh has forsaken the land.’”
13And he said to me, Thou shalt see yet greater iniquities which these do.
13He said also to me, “You will again see more of the great abominations which they do.
14And he brought me in to the porch of the house of the Lord that looks to the north; and, behold, [there were] women sitting there lamenting for Thammuz.
14Then he brought me to the door of the gate of Yahweh’s house which was toward the north; and I saw the women sit there weeping for Tammuz.
15And he said to me, Son of man, thou hast seen; but thou shalt yet see [evil] practices greater than these.
15Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? You will again see yet greater abominations than these.
16And he brought me into the inner court of the house of the Lord, and at the entrance of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twentymen, with their back parts toward the temple of the Lord, and their faces [turned] the opposite way; and these were worshipping the sun .
16He brought me into the inner court of Yahweh’s house; and I saw at the door of Yahweh’s temple, between the porch and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs toward Yahweh’s temple and their faces toward the east. They were worshiping the sun toward the east.
17And he said to me, Son of man, thou hast seen this. [Is it] a little thing to the house of Juda to practise the iniquities which they have practised here? for they have filled the land with iniquity: and , behold, these are as scorners.
17Then he said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? For they have filled the land with violence, and have turned again to provoke me to anger. Behold, they put the branch to their nose.
18Therefore will I deal with them in wrath: mine eye shall not spare, nor will I have any mercy.
18Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.”
