1And after these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram, I shield thee, thy reward shall be very great .
1After these things Yahweh’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
2And Abram said, Master [and] Lord , what wilt thou give me? whereas I am departing without a child, but the son of Masek my home-born female slave, this Eliezer of Damascus [is mine heir].
2Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3And Abram said, [I am grieved] since thou hast given me no seed, but my home-born [servant] shall succeed me.
3Abram said, “Behold, you have given no children to me: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir.”
4And immediately there was a voice of the Lord to him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come out of thee shall be thine heir.
4Behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.”
5And he brought him out and said to him, Look up now to heaven, and count the stars, if thou shalt be able to number them fully, and he said , Thus shall thy seed be.
5Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.”
6And Abram believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
6He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.
7And he said to him, I am God that brought thee out of the land of the Chaldeans, so as to give thee this land to inherit .
7He said to Abram, “I am Yahweh who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it.”
8And he said, Master [and] Lord , how shall I know that I shall inherit it?
8He said, “Lord Yahweh, how will I know that I will inherit it?”
9And he said to him, Take for me an heifer in her third year, and a she-goat in her third year, and a ram in his third year, and a dove and a pigeon.
9He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
10So he took to him all these, and divided them in the midst, and set them opposite to each other, but the birds he did not divide .
10He brought him all these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other; but he didn’t divide the birds.
11And birds came down upon the bodies, [even] upon the divided parts of them, and Abram sat down by them .
11The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
12And about sunset a trance fell upon Abram, and lo! a great gloomy terror falls upon him.
12When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him.
13And it was said to Abram, Thou shalt surely know that thy seed shall be a sojourner in a land not their own, and they shall enslave them, and afflict them, and humble them four hundred years.
13He said to Abram, “Know for sure that your offspring will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years.
14And the nation whomsoever they shall serve I will judge; and after this, they shall come forth hither with much property.
14I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great wealth;
15But thou shalt depart to thy fathers in peace, nourished in a good old age.
15but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried at a good old age.
16And in the fourth generation they shall return hither, for the sins of the Amorites are not yet filled up, even until now.
16In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full.”
17And when the sun was about to set, there was a flame, and beholda smoking furnace and lamps of fire, which passed between these divided pieces.
17It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
18In that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, To thy seed I will give this land , from the river of Egypt to the great riverEuphrates.
18In that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I have given this land to your offspring, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:
19The Kenites, and the Kenezites, and the Kedmoneans,
19the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,
20and the Chettites, and the Pherezites, and the Raphaim,
20the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,
21and the Amorites, and the Chananites, and the Evites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites.
21the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”
1And Sara the wife of Abrambore him no children; and she had an Egyptian maid, whose name was Agar.
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2And Sara said to Abram, Behold, the Lord has restrained me from bearing, go therefore in to my maid, that I may get children for myself through her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sara.
2Sarai said to Abram, “See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3So Sara the wife of Abram having taken Agar the Egyptianher handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Chanaan, gave her to Abram her husband as a wife to him.
3Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4And he went in to Agar, and she conceived, and saw that she was with child, and her mistress was dishonoured before her .
4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5And Sara said to Abram, I am injured by thee; I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and when I saw that she was with child, I was dishonoured before her. The Lord judge between me and thee.
5Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”
6And Abram said to Sara, Behold thy handmaid is in thy hands, use her as it may seem good to thee. And Sara afflicted her, and she fled from her face.
6But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7And an angel of the Lord found her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Sur.
7Yahweh’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.
8And the angel of the Lord said to her, Agar, Sara's maid, whence comest thou, and whither goest thou? and she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sara.
8He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”
9And the angel of the Lord said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
9Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”
10And the angel of the Lord said to her, I will surely multiply thy seed, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.
10Yahweh’s angel said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude.”
11And the angel of the Lord said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ismael, for the Lord hath hearkened to thy humiliation.
11Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.
12He shall be a wild man, his hands against all, and the hands of all against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
12He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposed to all of his brothers.”
13And she called the name of the Lord God who spoke to her, Thou art God who seest me; for she said, For I have openly seen him that appeared to me.
13She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”
14Therefore she called the well , The well of him whom I have openly seen; behold it is between Cades and Barad.
14Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15And Agar bore a son to Abram; and Abram called the name of his son which Agar bore to him, Ismael.
15Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Agar bore Ismael to Abram.
16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
