1And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and beheld, and lo! Esau his brother coming, and four hundred men with him; and Jacob divided the children to Lea and to Rachel, and the two handmaidens.
1Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two servants.
2And he put the two handmaidens and their children with the first, and Lea and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.
2He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.
3But he advanced himself before them, and did reverence to the ground seven times, until he drew near to his brother.
3He himself passed over in front of them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4And Esau ran on to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they both wept.
4Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.
5And Esau looked up and saw the women and the children, and said, What are these to thee? And he said, The children with which God has mercifully blessed thy servant.
5He lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, “Who are these with you?” He said, The children whom God has graciously given your servant.
6And the maid-servants and their children drew near and did reverence.
6Then the servants came near with their children, and they bowed themselves.
7And Lea and her children drew nearand did reverence; and after this drew near Rachel and Joseph, and did reverence.
7Leah also and her children came near, and bowed themselves. After them, Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
8And he said, What are these things to thee, all these companies that I have met? And he said, That thy servant might find grace in thy sight, my lord.
8Esau said, What do you mean by all this company which I met?” Jacob said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.
9And Esau said, I have much, my brother; keep thine own.
9Esau said, I have enough, my brother; let that which you have be yours.
10And Jacob said, If I have found grace in thy sight, receive the gifts through my hands; therefore have I seen thy face, as if any one should see the face of God, and thou shalt be well-pleased with me.
10Jacob said, “Please, no, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present at my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God, and you were pleased with me.
11Receive my blessings, which I have brought thee, because God has had mercy on me, and I have all things; and he constrained him, and he took [them].
11Please take the gift that I brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” He urged him, and he took it.
12And he said, Let us depart, and proceed right onward.
12Esau said, Let’s take our journey, and let’s go, and I will go before you.
13And he said to him, My lord knows, that the children are very tender, and the flocks and the herds with me are with young; if then I shall drive them hard one day, all the cattle will die.
13Jacob said to him, My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.
14Let my lord go on before his servant, and I shall have strength on the road according to the ease of the journey before me, and according to the strength of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.
14Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently, according to the pace of the livestock that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.
15And Esau said, I will leave with thee some of the people who are with me. And he said, Why so? it is enough that I have found favour before thee, [my] lord.
15Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me.” He said, Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.
16And Esau returned on that day on his journey to Seir.
16So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
17And Jacob departs to his tents; and he made for himself there habitations, and for his cattle he made booths; therefore he called the name of that place, Booths.

19And he bought the portion of the field, where he pitched his tent, of Emmor the father of Sychem, for a hundred lambs.
19He bought the parcel of ground where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.
20And he set up there an altar , and called on the God of Israel.
20He erected an altar there, and called it El Elohe Israel.
1And Dina, the daughter of Lea, whom she bore to Jacob, went forth to observe the daughters of the inhabitants.
1Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2And Sychem the son of Emmor the Evite, the ruler of the land, saw her, and took her and lay with her, and humbled her.
2Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.
3And he was attached to the soul of Dina the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and he spoke kindly to the damsel.
3His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.
4Sychem spoke to Emmor his father, saying, Take for me this damsel to wife.
4Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, “Get me this young lady as a wife.
5And Jacob heard that the son of Emmor had defiled Dina his daughter (now his sons were with his cattle in the plain). And Jacob was silent until they came.
5Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.
6And Emmor the father of Sychem went forth to Jacob, to speak to him.
6Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.
7And the sons of Jacob came from the plain; and when they heard, the men were deeply pained, and it was very grievous to them, because [the man] wrought folly in Israel, having lain with the daughter of Jacob, and so it must not be .
7The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing that ought not to be done.
8And Emmor spoke to them, saying, Sychem my son has chosen in his heart your daughter; give her therefore to him for a wife,
8Hamor talked with them, saying, “The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
9and intermarry with us. Give us your daughters , and take our daughters for your sons.
9Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10And dwell in the midst of us; and, behold, the land is spacious before you, dwell in it, and trade, and get possessions in it.
10You shall dwell with us, and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it.
11And Sychem said to her father and to her brothers, I would find grace before you, and we will give whatever ye shall name.
11Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.
12Multiply [your demand of] dowry very much, and I will give accordingly as ye shall say to me, only ye shall give me this damsel for a wife.
12Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife.
13And the sons of Jacob answered to Sychem and Emmor his father craftily, and spoke to them, because they had defiled Dina their sister.
13The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit when they spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
14And Symeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, said to them, We shall not be able to do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for it is a reproach to us.
14and said to them, We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.
15Only on these terms will we conform to you, and dwell among you, if ye also will be as we are, in that every male of you be circumcised.
15Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised,
16And we will give our daughters to you, and we will take of your daughters for wives to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will be as one race.
16then will we give our daughters to you; and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17But if ye will not hearken to us to be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart.
17But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone.
18And the words pleased Emmor, and Sychem the son of Emmor.
18Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
19And the young man delayed not to do this thing, for he was much attached to Jacob's daughter, and he was the most honourable of all in his father's house.
19The young man didn’t wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacobs daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father.
20And Emmor and Sychem his soncame to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
20Hamor and Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying,
21These men are peaceable, let them dwell with us upon the land, and let them trade in it, and beholdthe land is extensive before them; we will take their daughters to us for wives, and we will give them our daughters.
21These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For behold, the land is large enough for them. Let’s take their daughters to us for wives, and let’s give them our daughters.
22Only on these terms will the men conform to us to dwell with us so as to be one people, if every male of us be circumcised, as they also are circumcised.
22Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people, if every male among us is circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23And shall not their cattle and their herds, and their possessions, be ours? only in this let us conform to them, and they will dwell with us.
23Won’t their livestock and their possessions and all their animals be ours? Only let’s give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us.
24And all that went in at the gate of their city hearkened to Emmor and Sychem his son, and they were circumcised in the flesh of their foreskin every male.
24All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
25And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, the two sons of Jacob, Symeon and Levi, Dina's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city securely, and slew every male.
25On the third day, when they were sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.
26And they slew Emmor and Sychem his sonwith the edge of the sword, and took Dina out of the house of Sychem, and went forth.
26They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
27But the sons of Jacobcame upon the wounded, and ravaged the city wherein they had defiled Dina their sister.
27Jacob’s sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28And their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses they took, and all things whatsoever were in the city, and whatsoever were in the plain.
28They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field,
29And they took captive all the persons of them, and all their store, and their wives, and plundered both whatever things there were in the city, and whatever things there were in the houses.
29and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house.
30And Jacob said to Symeon and Levi, Ye have made me hateful so that I should be evil to all the inhabitants of the land, both among the Chananites and the Pherezites, and I am few in number; they will gather themselves against me and cut me in pieces, and I shall be utterly destroyed, and my house.
30Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.
31And they said, Nay, but shall they treat our sister as an harlot?
31They said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?
