16These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Chanaan, and said to them, Go up by this wilderness; and ye shall go up to the mountain,
17Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country.
18and ye shall see the land, what it is, and the people that dwells on it, whether it is strong or weak, or [whether] they are few or many.
18See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
19And what the land is on which they dwell , [whether] it is good or bad; and what the cities are wherein these dwell , whether they dwell in walled [cities] or unwalled.
19and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
20And what the land is, whether rich or poor; whether there are trees in it or no: and ye shall persevere and take of the fruits of the land: and the days [were] the days of spring, the forerunners of the grape.
20and what the land is, whether it is fertile or poor, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.
21And they went upand surveyed the land from the wilderness of Sin to Rhoob, as men go in to Æmath.
21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.
22And they went up by the wilderness, and departed as far as Chebron; and there [was] Achiman, and Sessi, and Thelami, the progeny of Enach. Now Chebron was built seven years before Tanin of Egypt.
22They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23And they came to the valley of the cluster and surveyed it; and they cut down thence a bough and one cluster of grapes upon it, and bore it on staves, and [they took] of the pomegranates and the figs.
23They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs.
24And they called that place, The valley of the cluster, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.
25And they returned from thence, having surveyed the land, after forty days.
25They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.
26And they proceeded and came to Moses and Aaronand all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Pharan Cades; and they brought word to them and to all the congregation, and they shewed the fruit of the land:
26They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land.
27and they reported to him, and said, We came into the land into which thou sentest us, a land flowing with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
27They told him, and said, We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
28Only the nation that dwells upon it is bold, and they have very great and strong walled towns, and we saw there the children of Enach.
28However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there.
29And Amalec dwells in the land toward the south: and the Chettite and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwells in the hill country: and the Chananite dwells by the sea, and by the river Jordan.
29Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.
30And Chaleb stayed the people from speaking before Moses, and said to him, Nay, but we will go up by all means, and will inherit it, for we shall surely prevail against them.
30Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let’s go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!”
31But the men that went up together with him said, We will not go up, for we shall not by any means be able to go up against the nation, for it is much stronger than we.
31But the men who went up with him said, We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32And they brought a horror of that land which they surveyed upon the children of Israel, saying, The landwhich we passed by to survey it , is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of extraordinary stature.
32They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.
33And there we saw the giants; and we were before them as locusts, yea even so were we before them.
33There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
1And all the congregation lifted up their voiceand cried; and the people wept all that night.
1All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron; and all the congregation said to them,
2All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
3Would we had died in the land of Egypt! or in this wilderness, would we had died! and why does the Lord bring us into this landto fall in war? our wives and our children shall be for a prey: now then it is better to return into Egypt.
3Why does Yahweh bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be captured or killed! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return into Egypt?”
4And they said one to another, Let us make a ruler, and return into Egypt.
4They said to one another, Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.
5And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.
5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
6But Joshua the [son] of Naue, and Chaleb the [son] of Jephonne, of [the number of] them that spied out the land, rent their garments,
6Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes.
7and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The landwhich we surveyed is indeed extremely good .
7They spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.
8If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
8If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which flows with milk and honey.
9Only depart not from the Lord; and fear ye not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; for the season [of prosperity] is departed from them, but the Lord [is] among us: fear them not.
9Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us. Their defense is removed from over them, and Yahweh is with us. Don’t fear them.
10And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.
10But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.
11And the Lord said to Moses, How long does this people provoke me? and how long do they refuse to believe mefor all the signs which I have wrought among them?
11Yahweh said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?
12I will smite them with death, and destroy them; and I will make of thee and of thy father's house a great nation, and much greater than this.
12I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.
13And Moses said to the Lord, So Egypt shall hear, for thou hast brought up this people from them by thy might.
13Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.
14Moreover all the dwellers upon this landhave heard that thou art Lord in the midst of this people, who, O Lord, art seen [by them] face to face, and thy cloud rests upon them, and thou goest before them by day in a pillar of a cloud , and by night in a pillar of fire .
14They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.
15And [if] thou shalt destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard thy name shall speak, saying,
15Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,
16Because the Lord could not bring this people into the land which he sware to them, he has overthrown them in the wilderness.
16Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.
17And now, O Lord, let thy strength be exalted, as thou spakest, saying,
17Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
18The Lord [is] long-suffering and merciful, and true, removing transgressions and iniquities and sins, and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.
18‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.
19Forgive this people their sin according to thy great mercy, as thou wast favourable to them from Egypt until now.
19Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
20And the Lord said to Moses, I am gracious to them according to thy word.
20Yahweh said, I have pardoned according to your word;
21But [as] I live and my name is living, so the glory of the Lord shall fill all the earth.
21but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory—
22For all the men who see my glory, and the signswhich I wrought in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me this tenth time, and have not hearkened to my voice,
22because all those men who have seen my glory and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
23surely they shall not see the land, which I sware to their fathers; but their children which are with me here, as many as know not good or evil, every inexperienced youth, to them will I give the land; but none who have provoked me shall see it.
23surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
24But my servant Chaleb, because there was another spirit in him, and he followed me , I will bring him into the land into which he entered, and his seed shall inherit it.
24But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him I will bring into the land into which he went. His offspring shall possess it.
25But Amalec and the Chananite dwell in the valley: to-morrow turn and depart for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
25Since the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.
26And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
26Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
27How long [shall I endure] this wicked congregation ? I have heard their murmurings against me, [even] the murmuring of the children of Israel, which they have murmured concerning you.
27How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
28Say to them, [As] I live, saith the Lord: surely as ye spoke into my ears, so will I do to you.
28Tell them, As I live, says Yahweh, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so I will do to you.
29Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all those of you that were reviewed, and those of you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward, all that murmured against me,
29Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me,
30ye shall not enter into the land for which I stretched out my hand to establish you upon it; except only Chaleb the son of Jephonne, and Joshua the [son] of Naue.
30surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
31And your little ones, who ye said should be a prey, them will I bring into the land; and they shall inherit the land, which ye rejected.
31But I will bring in your little ones that you said should be captured or killed, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
32And your carcases shall fall in this wilderness.
32But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33And your sons shall be fed in the wilderness forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until your carcases be consumed in the wilderness.
33Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies are consumed in the wilderness.
34According to the number of the days during which ye spied the land, forty days, a day for a year, ye shall bear your sins forty years, and ye shall know my fierce anger.
34After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.
35I the Lord have spoken, Surely will I do thus to this evil congregation that has risen up together against me: in this wilderness they shall be utterly consumed, and there they shall die.
35I, Yahweh, have spoken. I will surely do this to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.
36And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who came and murmured against it to the assembly so as to bring out evil words concerning the land,
36The men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,
37the men that spoke evil reports against the land, even died of the plague before the Lord.
37even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.
38And Joshua the son of Naue and Chaleb the son of Jephonne [still] lived of those men that went to spy out the land.
38But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
39And Moses spoke these words to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned exceedingly.
39Moses told these words to all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.
40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we that are herewill go up to the place of which the Lord has spoken, because we have sinned.
40They rose up early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised; for we have sinned.
41And Moses said, Why do ye transgress the word of the Lord? ye shall not prosper.
41Moses said, Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?
42Go not up, for the Lord is not with you; so shall ye fall before the face of your enemies.
42Don’t go up, for Yahweh isn’t among you; that way you won’t be struck down before your enemies.
43For Amalec and the Chananite [are] there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; because ye have disobeyed the Lord and turned aside, and the Lord will not be among you.
43For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you will fall by the sword because you turned back from following Yahweh; therefore Yahweh will not be with you.
44And having forced their passage, they went up to the top of the mountain; but the ark of the covenant of the Lord and Moses stirred not out of the camp.
44But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain. Nevertheless, the ark of Yahweh’s covenant and Moses didn’t depart out of the camp.
45And Amalec and the Chananite that dwelt in that mountain came down, and routed them, and destroyed them unto Herman; and they returned to the camp.
45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down even to Hormah.
