1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2Avenge the wrongs of the children of Israel on the Madianites, and afterwards thou shalt be added to thy people.
2“Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”
3And Moses spoke to the people, saying, Arm some of you , and set yourselves in array before the Lord against Madian, to inflict vengeance on Madian from the Lord.
3Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for war, that they may go against Midian, to execute Yahweh’s vengeance on Midian.
4Send a thousand of each tribe from all the tribes of the children of Israelto set themselves in array.
4You shall send one thousand out of every tribe, throughout all the tribes of Israel, to the war.”
5And they numbered of the thousands of Israela thousand of [each] tribe, twelve thousands; [these were] armed for war.
5So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6And Moses sent them away a thousand of every tribe with their forces, and Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest: and the holy instruments, and the signal trumpets [were] in their hands.
6Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.
7And they set themselves in array against Madian, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew every male.
7They fought against Midian, as Yahweh commanded Moses. They killed every male.
8And they slew the kings of Madian together with their slain [subjects]; even Evi and Rocon, and Sur, and Ur, and Roboc, five kings of Madian; and they slew with the sword Balaam the son of Beor with their [other] slain.
8They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.
9And they made a prey of the women of Madian, and their store, and their cattle, and all their possessions: and they spoiled their forces.
9The children of Israel took the women of Midian captive with their little ones; and all their livestock, all their flocks, and all their goods, they took as plunder.
10And they burnt with fire all their cities in the places of their habitation, and they burnt their villages with fire.
10All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.
11And they took all their plunder, and all their spoils, both man and beast.
11They took all the captives, and all the plunder, both of man and of animal.
12And they brought to Mosesand to Eleazar the priest, and to all the children of Israel, the captives, and the spoils, and the plunder, to the camp to Araboth Moab, which is at Jordan by Jericho.
12They brought the captives with the prey and the plunder, to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan at Jericho.
13And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the rulers of the synagogue went forth out of the camp to meet them .
13Moses and Eleazar the priest, with all the princes of the congregation, went out to meet them outside of the camp.
14And Moses was angry with the captains of the host, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundredswho came from the battle-array.
14Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.
15And Moses said to them, Why have ye saved every female alive?
15Moses said to them, “Have you saved all the women alive?
16For they were [the occasion] to the children of Israel by the word of Balaam of their revolting and despising the word of the Lord, because of Phogor; and there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord.
16Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, and so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.
17Now then slay every male in all the spoil, slay every woman, who has known the lying with man.
17Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him.
18And as for all the captivity of women, who have not known the lying with man, save ye them alive .
18But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
19And ye shall encamp outside the [great] camp seven days; every one who has slain and who touches a dead body, shall be purified on the third day, and ye and your captivity [shall purify yourselves] on the seventh day.
19“Encamp outside of the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.
20And ye shall purify every garment and every leathern utensil, and all furniture of goat skin, and every wooden vessel.
20You shall purify every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats’ hair, and all things made of wood.”
21And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the host that came from the battle-array, This [is] the ordinance of the law which the Lord has commanded Moses.
21Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went to the battle, “This is the statute of the law which Yahweh has commanded Moses.
22Beside the gold, and the silver, and the brass, and the iron, and lead, and tin,
22However the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23every thing that shall pass through the fireshall so be clean, nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of sanctification; and whatsoever will not pass through the fire shall pass through water.
23everything that may withstand the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity. All that doesn’t withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water.
24And on the seventh day ye shall wash your garments, and be clean; and afterwards ye shall come into the camp.
24You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean. Afterward you shall come into the camp.”
25And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
25Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
26Take the sum of the spoils of the captivity both of man and beast, thou and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the families of the congregation.
26“Count the plunder that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation;
27And ye shall divide the spoils between the warriors that went out to battle, and the whole congregation.
27and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation.
28And ye shall take a tribute for the Lord from the warriors that went out to battle; one soul out of five hundred, from the men, and from the cattle, even from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses; and ye shall take from their half.
28Levy a tribute to Yahweh of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred; of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks.
29And thou shalt give [them] to Eleazar the priest [as] the first-fruits of the Lord.
29Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, for Yahweh’s wave offering.
30And from the half belonging to the children of Israel thou shalt take one in fifty from the men, and from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses, and from all the cattle; and thou shalt give them to the Levites that keep the charges in the tabernacle of the Lord.
30Of the children of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites, who perform the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle.”
31And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
31Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Yahweh commanded Moses.
32And that which remained of the spoil which the warriors took, was—of the sheep, six hundred and seventy-five thousand:
32Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
33and oxen, seventy-two thousand:
33seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34and asses, sixty-one thousand.
34sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35And persons of women who had not known lying with man, all the souls, thirty-two thousand.
35and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him.
36And the half, [even] the portion of them that went out to war, from the number of the sheep, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.
36The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;
37And the tribute to the Lord from the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.
37and Yahweh’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.
38And the oxen, six and thirtythousand, and the tribute to the Lord, seventy-two.
38The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which Yahweh’s tribute was seventy-two.
39And asses, thirty thousand and five hundred, and the tribute to the Lord, sixty-one:
39The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which Yahweh’s tribute was sixty-one.
40and the persons, sixteen thousand, and the tribute of them to the Lord, thirty-two souls.
40The persons were sixteen thousand, of whom Yahweh’s tribute was thirty-two persons.
41And Moses gave the tribute to the Lord, the heave-offering of God, to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses;
41Moses gave the tribute, which was Yahweh’s wave offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
42from the half belonging to the children of Israel, whom Moses separated from the men of war.
42Of the children of Israel’s half, which Moses divided off from the men who fought
43And the half [taken] from the sheep, belonging to the congregation, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.
43(now the congregation’s half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
44And the oxen, thirty-six thousand;
44thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45asses, thirty thousand and five hundred;
45thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
46and persons, sixteen thousand.
46and sixteen thousand persons),
47And Moses took of the half belonging to the children of Israel the fiftieth part, of men and of cattle, and he gave them to the Leviteswho keep the charges of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
47even of the children of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of Yahweh’s tabernacle, as Yahweh commanded Moses.
48And all those who were appointed to be officers of thousands of the host, captains of thousandsand captains of hundreds, approached Moses, and said to Moses,
48The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses.
49Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war with us, and not one is missing.
49They said to Moses, “Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.
50And we have brought our gift to the Lord, [every] man who has found an article of gold , whether an armlet, or a chain, or a ring, or a bracelet, or a clasp for hair, to make atonement for us before the Lord.
50We have brought Yahweh’s offering, what every man found: gold ornaments, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our souls before Yahweh.”
51And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, even every wrought article.
51Moses and Eleazar the priest took their gold, even all worked jewels.
52And all the wrought gold, even the offering that they offered to the Lord, was sixteen thousand and seven hundred and fifty shekels from the captains of thousandsand the captains of hundreds.
52All the gold of the wave offering that they offered up to Yahweh, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels.
53For the men of war took plunder every one for himself.
53The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.
54And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and brought the vessels into the tabernacle of witness, a memorial of the children of Israel before the Lord.
54Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting for a memorial for the children of Israel before Yahweh.
1And the children of Ruben and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Galaad; and the place was a place for cattle:
1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock. They saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead. Behold, the place was a place for livestock.
2and the children of Ruben and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
2Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
3Ataroth, and Dæbon, and Jazer, and Namra, and Esebon, and Eleale, and Sebama, and Nabau, and Bæan,
3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
4the land which the Lord has delivered up before the children of Israel, is pasture land, and thy servants have cattle.
4the land which Yahweh struck before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock; and your servants have livestock.”
5And they said, If we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given to thy servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over Jordan.
5They said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Don’t bring us over the Jordan.”
6And Moses said to the sons of Gadand the sons of Ruben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
6Moses said to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?
7And why do ye pervert the minds of the children of Israel, that they should not cross over into the land, which the Lord gives them?
7Why do you discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which Yahweh has given them?
8Did not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Cades Barne to spy out the land?
8Your fathers did so when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
9and they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land, which the Lord gave them.
9For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which Yahweh had given them.
10And the Lord was very angry in that day, and sware, saying,
10Yahweh’s anger burned in that day, and he swore, saying,
11Surely these men who came up out of Egyptfrom twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I sware [to give] to Abraam and Isaacand Jacob, for they have not closely followed after me:
11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me,
12save Caleb the son of Jephonne, who was set apart, and Joshua the son of Naue, for they closely followed after the Lord.
12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, because they have followed Yahweh completely.’
13And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and for forty years he caused them to wander in the wilderness , until all the generation which did evil in the sight of the Lord was extinct.
13Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation who had done evil in Yahweh’s sight was consumed.
14Behold, ye are risen up in the room of your fathers, a combination of sinful men, to increase yet farther the fierce wrath of the Lord against Israel.
14“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to increase the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.
15For ye will turn away from him to desert him yet once more in the wilderness, and ye will sin against this whole congregation.
15For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and you will destroy all these people.”
16And they came to him, and said, We will build here folds for our cattle, and cities for our possessions;
16They came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones;
17and we will arm ourselves and go as an advanced guard before the children of Israel, until we shall have brought them into their place; and our possessions shall remain in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
17but we ourselves will be ready armed to go before the children of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. Our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18We will not return to our houses till the children of Israel shall have been distributed, each to his own inheritance.
18We will not return to our houses until the children of Israel have all received their inheritance.
19And we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of Jordan and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond Jordan eastward.
19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan eastward.”
20And Moses said to them, If ye will do according to these words, if ye will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle,
20Moses said to them: “If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before Yahweh to the war,
21and every one of you will pass over Jordan fully armed before the Lord, until his enemy be destroyed from before his face,
21and every one of your armed men will pass over the Jordan before Yahweh until he has driven out his enemies from before him,
22and the land shall be subdued before the Lord, then afterwards ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and as regards Israel; and this land shall be to you for a possession before the Lord.
22and the land is subdued before Yahweh; then afterward you shall return, and be clear of obligation to Yahweh and to Israel. Then this land shall be your possession before Yahweh.
23But if ye will not do so, ye will sin against the Lord; and ye shall know your sin, when afflictions shall come upon you .
23“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.
24And ye shall build for yourselves cities for your store, and folds for your cattle; and ye shall do that which proceeds out of your mouth.
24Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”
25And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad spoke to Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as our lord commands.
25The children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
26Our store, and our wives, and all our cattle shall be in the cities of Galaad.
26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock shall be there in the cities of Gilead;
27But thy servants will go over all armed and set in order before the Lord to battle, as [our] lord says.
27but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, as my lord says.”
28And Moses appointed to them [for judges] Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Naue, and the chiefs of the families of the tribes of Israel.
28So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the children of Israel.
29And Moses said to them, If the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad will pass over Jordan with you , every one armed for war before the Lord, and ye shall subdue the land before you, then ye shall give to them the land of Galaad for a possession.
29Moses said to them, “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every man who is armed to battle before Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;
30But if they will not pass over armed with you to war before the Lord, then shall ye cause to pass over their possessions and their wives and their cattle before you into the land of Chanaan, and they shall inherit with you in the land of Chanaan.
30but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”
31And the sons of Ruben and the sons of Gad answered, saying, Whatsoever the Lord says to his servants, that will we do.
31The children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, “As Yahweh has said to your servants, so will we do.
32We will go over armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and ye shall give us our inheritance beyond Jordan.
32We will pass over armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33And Moses gave to them, even to the sons of Gadand the sons of Ruben, and to the halftribe of Manasse of the sons of Joseph, the kingdom of Seon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, the land and its cities with its coasts, the cities of the land round about.
33Moses gave to them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan; the land, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of the surrounding land.
34And the sons of Gad built Dæbon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
34The children of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35and Sophar, and Jazer, and they set them up,
35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36and Namram, and Bætharan, strong cities, and folds for sheep.
36Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep.
37And the sons of Ruben built Esebon, and Eleale, and Kariatham,
37The children of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38and Beelmeon, surrounded [with walls], and Sebama; and they called the names of the cities which they built, after their own names.
38Nebo, and Baal Meon, (their names being changed), and Sibmah. They gave other names to the cities which they built.
39And a son of Machir the son of Manasse went to Galaad, and took it, and destroyed the Amorite who dwelt in it.
39The children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein.
40And Moses gave Galaad to Machir the son of Manasse, and he dwelt there.
40Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh; and he lived therein.
41And Jair the [son] of Manasse went and took their villages, and called them the villages of Jair.
41Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its villages, and called them Havvoth Jair.
42And Nabau went and took Caath and her villages, and called them Naboth after his name.
42Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.
