1Hear these things, ye priests; and attend, O house of Israel; and hearken, O house of the king; for the controversy is with you, because ye have been a snare in Scopia, and as a net spread on Itabyrium,
1“Listen to this, you priests! Listen, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king! For the judgment is against you; for you have been a snare at Mizpah, and a net spread on Tabor.
2which they that hunt the prey have fixed: but I will correct you.
2The rebels are deep in slaughter, but I discipline all of them.
3I know Ephraim, and Israel is not far from me: for nowEphraim has gone grievously a-whoring, Israel is defiled.
3I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; for now, Ephraim, you have played the prostitute. Israel is defiled.
4They have not framed their counsels to return to their God, for the spirit of fornication is in them, and they have not known the Lord.
4Their deeds won’t allow them to turn to their God, for the spirit of prostitution is within them, and they don’t know Yahweh.
5And the pride of Israel shall be brought low before his face; and Israel and Ephraim shall fall in their iniquities; and Judas also shall fall with them.
5The pride of Israel testifies to his face. Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them.
6They shall go with sheep and calves diligently to seek the Lord; but they shall not find him, for he has withdrawn himself from them.
6They will go with their flocks and with their herds to seek Yahweh, but they won’t find him. He has withdrawn himself from them.
7For they have forsaken the Lord; for strange children have been born to them: now shall the cankerworm devour them and their heritages.
7They are unfaithful to Yahweh; for they have borne illegitimate children. Now the new moon will devour them with their fields.
8Blow ye the trumpet on the hills, sound aloud on the heights: proclaim in the house of On, Benjamin is amazed.
8“Blow the cornet in Gibeah, and the trumpet in Ramah! Sound a battle cry at Beth Aven, behind you, Benjamin!
9Ephraim has come to nought in the days of reproof: in the tribes of IsraelI have shown faithful [dealings].
9Ephraim will become a desolation in the day of rebuke. Among the tribes of Israel, I have made known that which will surely be.
10The princes of Juda became as they that removed the bounds: I will pour out upon them my fury as water.
10The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark. I will pour out my wrath on them like water.
11Ephraim altogether prevailed against his adversary, he trod judgment under foot, for he began to go after vanities.
11Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment, because he is intent in his pursuit of idols.
12Therefore I [will be] as consternation to Ephraim , and as a goad to the house of Juda.
12Therefore I am to Ephraim like a moth, and to the house of Judah like rottenness.
13And Ephraim saw his disease, and Judas his pain; then Ephraim went to the Assyrians, and sent ambassadors to king Jarim: but he could not heal you, and your pain shall in nowise cease from you .
13“When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to King Jareb: but he is not able to heal you, neither will he cure you of your wound.
14Wherefore I am as a panther to Ephraim , and as a lion to the house of Juda: and I will tear, and go away; and I will take, and there shall be none to deliver.
14For I will be to Ephraim like a lion, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I myself will tear in pieces and go away. I will carry off, and there will be no one to deliver.
15I will go and return to my place, until they are brought to nought, and [then] shall they seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me early, saying,
15I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me earnestly.”
1Let us go, and return to the Lord our God; for he has torn , and will heal us; he will smite, and bind us up .
1“Come! Let’s return to Yahweh; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.
2After two days he will heal us: in the third day we shall arise, and live before him, and shall know [him]:
2After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up, and we will live before him.
3let us follow on to know the Lord: we shall find him ready as the morning, and he will come to us as the early and latter rain to the earth.
3Let’s acknowledge Yahweh. Let’s press on to know Yahweh. As surely as the sun rises, Yahweh will appear. He will come to us like the rain, like the spring rain that waters the earth.”
4What shall I do unto thee, Ephraim? What shall I do to thee, Juda? whereas your mercy is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew that goes away.
4“Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.
5Therefore have I mown down your prophets; I have slain them with the word of my mouth: and my judgment shall go forth as the light.
5Therefore I have cut them to pieces with the prophets; I killed them with the words of my mouth. Your judgments are like a flash of lightning.
6For I will [have] mercy rather than sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than whole-burnt -offerings.
6For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
7But they are as a man transgressing a covenant:
7But they, like Adam, have broken the covenant. They were unfaithful to me there.
8there the city Galaad despised me, working vanity, troubling water.
8Gilead is a city of those who work iniquity; it is stained with blood.
9And thy strength [is that] of a robber: the priests have hid the way, they have murdered [the people of] Sicima; for they have wrought iniquity in the house of Israel.
9As gangs of robbers wait to ambush a man, so the company of priests murder on the path toward Shechem, committing shameful crimes.
10I have seen horrible [things] there, [even] the fornication of Ephraim: Israel and Juda are defiled;
10In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing. There is prostitution in Ephraim. Israel is defiled.
11begin to gather grapes for thyself, when I turn the captivity of my people.
11“Also, Judah, there is a harvest appointed for you, when I restore the fortunes of my people.
