1And these [are] the ordinances which thou shalt set before them.
1“Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them:
2If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years shall he serve thee, and in the seventh year he shall go forth free for nothing.
2“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything.
3If he should have come in alone, he shall also go forth alone; and if his wife should have gone in together with him, his wife also shall go out .
3If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself. If he is married, then his wife shall go out with him.
4Moreover, if his master give him a wife, and she have [born] him sons or daughters, the wife and the children shall be his master's; and he shall go forth alone.
4If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
5And if the servant should answer and say, I love my master and wifeand children, I will not go away free;
5But if the servant shall plainly say, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free;’
6his master shall bring him to the judgment-seat of God, and then shall he bring him to the door,—to the door-post, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever.
6then his master shall bring him to God, and shall bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.
7And if any one sell his daughter as a domestic, she shall not depart as the maid-servants depart.
7“If a man sells his daughter to be a female servant, she shall not go out as the male servants do.
8If she be not pleasing to her master, after she has betrothed herself to him, he shall let her go free; but he is not at liberty to sell her to a foreign nation, because he has trifled with her.
8If she doesn’t please her master, who has married her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her.
9And if he should have betrothed her to his son, he shall do to her according to the right of daughters.
9If he marries her to his son, he shall deal with her as a daughter.
10And if he take another to himself, he shall not deprive her of necessaries and her apparel, and her companionship [with him].
10If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights.
11And if he will not do these three things to her, she shall go out free without money.
11If he doesn’t do these three things for her, she may go free without paying any money.
12And if any man smite another and he die, let him be certainly put to death.
12“One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death,
13But as for him that did it not willingly, but God delivered him into his hands, I will give thee a place whither the slayer may flee.
13but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen; then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.
14And if any one lie in wait for his neighbour to slay him by craft, and he go for refuge, thou shalt take him from my altar to put him to death.
14If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.
15Whoever smites his father or his mother, let him be certainly put to death.
15“Anyone who attacks his father or his mother shall be surely put to death.
16He that reviles his father or his mother shall surely die.
16“Anyone who kidnaps someone and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.
17Whosoever shall steal one of the children of Israel, and prevail over him and sell him, and he be found with him, let him certainly die.
17“Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
18And if two men revile each other and smite the one the other with a stoneor his fist, and he die not, but be laid upon his bed;
18“If men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he doesn’t die, but is confined to bed;
19if the man arise and walk abroad on his staff, he that smote him shall be clear; only he shall pay for his loss of time, and for his healing .
19if he rises again and walks around with his staff, then he who struck him shall be cleared; only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for his healing until he is thoroughly healed.
20And if a man smite his man-servant or his maid-servant, with a rod, and [the party] die under his hands, he shall be surely punished.
20“If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, the man shall surely be punished.
21But if [the servant] continue to live a day or two, let not [the master] be punished; for he is his money.
21Notwithstanding, if his servant gets up after a day or two, he shall not be punished, for the servant is his property.
22And if two men strive and smite a woman with child, and her child be born imperfectly formed, he shall be forced to pay a penalty: as the woman's husband may lay upon him, he shall pay with a valuation.
22“If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman’s husband demands and the judges allow.
23But if it be perfectly formed, he shall give life for life,
23But if any harm follows, then you must take life for life,
24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
25burning for burning, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise.
26And if one smite the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his maid-servant, and put it out, he shall let them go free for their eye's sake.
26“If a man strikes his servant’s eye, or his maid’s eye, and destroys it, he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake.
27And if he should smite out the tooth of his man-servant, or the tooth of his maid-servant, he shall send them away free for their tooth's sake.
27If he strikes out his male servant’s tooth, or his female servant’s tooth, he shall let the servant go free for his tooth’s sake.
28And if a bull gore a man or woman and they die, the bull shall be stoned with stones, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall be clear.
28“If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible.
29But if the bull should have been given to goring in former time, and men should have told his owner, and he have not removed him, but he should have slain a man or woman, the bull shall be stoned, and his owner shall die also .
29But if the bull had a habit of goring in the past, and this has been testified to its owner, and he has not kept it in, but it has killed a man or a woman, the bull shall be stoned, and its owner shall also be put to death.
30And if a ransom should be imposed on him, he shall pay for the ransom of his soul as much as they shall lay upon him.
30If a ransom is imposed on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is imposed.
31And if [the bull] gore a son or daughter, let them do to him according to this ordinance.
31Whether it has gored a son or has gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him.
32And if the bull gore a man-servant or maid-servant, he shall pay to their master thirty silver didrachms, and the bull shall be stoned.
32If the bull gores a male servant or a female servant, thirty shekels of silver shall be given to their master, and the ox shall be stoned.
33And if any one open a pitor dig a cavity in stone, and cover it not, and an ox or an ass fall in there,
33“If a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and doesn’t cover it, and a bull or a donkey falls into it,
34the owner of the pit shall make compensation; he shall give money to their owner, and the dead shall be his own.
34the owner of the pit shall make it good. He shall give money to its owner, and the dead animal shall be his.
35And if any man's bull gore the bull of his neighbour, and it die, they shall sell the living bulland divide the money, and they shall divide the dead bull.
35“If one man’s bull injures another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live bull, and divide its price; and they shall also divide the dead animal.
36But if the bull be known to have been given to goring in time past, and they have testified to his owner, and he have not removed him, he shall repay bull for bull, but the dead shall be his own.
36Or if it is known that the bull was in the habit of goring in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall surely pay bull for bull, and the dead animal shall be his own.
1And if the thief be found in the breach [made by himself] and be smitten and die, there shall not be blood shed for him.
1“If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
2But if the sun be risen upon him, he is guilty, he shall die instead; and if a thief have nothing, let him be sold in compensation for what he has stolen.
2If the thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt of bloodshed for him.
3And if the thing stolen be left and be in his hand alive, whether ox or sheep, he shall restore them two-fold.
3If the sun has risen on him, he is guilty of bloodshed. He shall make restitution. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
4And if any one should feed down a field or a vineyard, and should send in his beast to feed down another field, he shall make compensation of his own field according to his produce; and if he shall have fed down the whole field, he shall pay for compensation the best of his own field and the best of his vineyard.
4If the stolen property is found in his hand alive, whether it is ox, donkey, or sheep, he shall pay double.
5And if fire have gone forth and caught thorns, and should also set on fire threshing-floors or ears of corn or a field, he that kindled the fire shall make compensation.
5“If a man causes a field or vineyard to be eaten by letting his animal loose, and it grazes in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field, and from the best of his own vineyard.
6And if any one give to his neighbour money or goods to keep, and they be stolen out of the man's house, if the thief be found, he shall repay double.
6“If fire breaks out, and catches in thorns so that the shocks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field are consumed; he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
7But if the thief be not found, the master of the house shall come forward before God, and shall swear that surely he has not wrought wickedly in regard of any part of his neighbour's deposit,
7“If a man delivers to his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, if the thief is found, he shall pay double.
8according to every injury alleged, both concerning a calf, and an ass, and a sheep, and a garment, and every alleged loss, whatsoever in fact it may be,—the judgment of both shall proceed before God, and he that is convicted by God shall repay to his neighbour double.
8If the thief isn’t found, then the master of the house shall come near to God, to find out whether or not he has put his hand on his neighbor’s goods.
9And if any one give to his neighbour to keep a calf or sheepor any beast, and it be wounded or die or be taken, and no one know,
9For every matter of trespass, whether it is for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, or for any kind of lost thing, about which one says, ‘This is mine,’ the cause of both parties shall come before God. He whom God condemns shall pay double to his neighbor.
10an oath of God shall be between both, [each swearing] that he has surely not at all been guilty in the matter of his neighbour's deposit; and so his master shall hold him guiltless, and he shall not make compensation.
10“If a man delivers to his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is injured, or driven away, no man seeing it;
11And if it be stolen from him, he shall make compensation to the owner.
11the oath of Yahweh shall be between them both, he has not put his hand on his neighbor’s goods; and its owner shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution.
12And if it be seized of beasts, he shall bring him to [witness] the prey, and he shall not make compensation.
12But if it is stolen from him, the one who stole shall make restitution to its owner.
13And if any one borrow [ought] of his neighbour, and it be wounded or die or be carried away, and the owner of it be not with it, he shall make compensation.
13If it is torn in pieces, let him bring it for evidence. He shall not make good that which was torn.
14But if the owner be with it, he shall not make compensation: but if it be a hired thing, there shall be [a compensation] to him instead of his hire.
14“If a man borrows anything of his neighbor’s, and it is injured, or dies, its owner not being with it, he shall surely make restitution.
15And if any one deceive a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her for a wife to himself.
15If its owner is with it, he shall not make it good. If it is a leased thing, it came for its lease.
16And if her father positively refuse, and will not consent to give her to him for a wife, he shall pay compensation to her father according to the amount of the dowry of virgins.
16“If a man entices a virgin who isn’t pledged to be married, and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife.
17Ye shall not save the lives of sorcerers.
17If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
18Every one that lies with a beast ye shall surely put to death.
18“You shall not allow a sorceress to live.
19He that sacrifices to any gods but to the Lord alone, shall be destroyed by death.
19“Whoever has sex with an animal shall surely be put to death.
20And ye shall not hurt a stranger, nor afflict him; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
20“He who sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh only, shall be utterly destroyed.
21Ye shall hurt no widow or orphan.
21“You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
22And if ye should afflict them by ill-treatment, and they should cry aloud to me, I will surely hear their voice.
22“You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child.
23And I will be very angry, and will slay you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows and your children orphans.
23If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry;
24And if thou shouldest lend money to thy poor brother who is by thee, thou shalt not be hard upon him, thou shalt not exact usury of him.
24and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
25And if thou take thy neighbour's garment for a pledge, thou shalt restore it to him before sunset.
25“If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor. You shall not charge him interest.
26For this is his clothing, this is the only covering of his nakedness; wherein shall he sleep? If then he shall cry to me, I will hearken to him , for I am merciful.
26If you take your neighbor’s garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down,
27Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor speak ill of the ruler of thy people.
27for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.
28Thou shalt not keep back the first-fruits of thy threshing floor and press. The first-born of thy sons thou shalt give to me.
28“You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people.
29So shalt thou do with thy calf and thy sheep and thine ass; seven days shall it be under the mother, and the eighth day thou shalt give it to me.
29“You shall not delay to offer from your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. “You shall give the firstborn of your sons to me.
30And ye shall be holy men to me; and ye shall not eat flesh taken of beasts, ye shall cast it to the dog.
30You shall do likewise with your cattle and with your sheep. It shall be with its mother seven days, then on the eighth day you shall give it to me.
