1Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, that I was in the midst of the captivity by the river of Chobar; and the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
1Now in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river Chebar, the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
2On the fifth day of the month; this was the fifth year of the captivity of king Joakim.
2In the fifth of the month, which was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s captivity,
3And the word of the Lord came to Jezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river of Chobar; and the hand of the Lord was upon me.
3Yahweh’s word came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and Yahweh’s hand was there on him.
4And I looked, and, behold, a sweeping wind came from the north, and a great cloud on it, and [there was] brightness round about it, and gleaming fire, and in the midst of it as it were the appearance of amber in the midst of the fire, and brightness in it.
4I looked, and behold, a stormy wind came out of the north: a great cloud, with flashing lightning, and a brightness around it, and out of the middle of it as it were glowing metal, out of the middle of the fire.
5And in the midst as it were the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; the likeness of a man was upon them.
5Out of its center came the likeness of four living creatures. This was their appearance: They had the likeness of a man.
6And each one [had] four faces, and each one [had] four wings.
6Everyone had four faces, and each one of them had four wings.
7And their legs were straight; and their feet were winged, and [there were] sparks, like gleaming brass, and their wings were light.
7Their feet were straight feet. The sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot; and they sparkled like burnished bronze.
8And the hand of a man was under their wings on their four sides.
8They had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides. The four of them had their faces and their wings like this:
9And the faces of them four turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
9Their wings were joined to one another. They didn’t turn when they went. Each one went straight forward.
10And the likeness of their faces was the face of a man, and the face of a lion on the right to the four; and the face of a calf on the left to the four; and the face of an eagle to the four.
10As for the likeness of their faces, they had the face of a man. The four of them had the face of a lion on the right side. The four of them had the face of an ox on the left side. The four of them also had the face of an eagle.
11And the four had their wings spread out above; each one [had] two joined to one another, and two covered their bodies.
11Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above. Two wings of each one touched another, and two covered their bodies.
12And each one went straight forward: wherever the spirit was going they went, and turned not back.
12Each one went straight forward. Where the spirit was to go, they went. They didn’t turn when they went.
13And in the midst of the living creatures [there was] an appearance as of burning coals of fire, as an appearance of lamps turning among the living creatures; and the brightness of fire , and out of the fire came forth lightning.
13As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches. The fire went up and down among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and lightning went out of the fire.
15And I looked, and, behold, the four [had each] one wheel on the ground near the living creatures.
15Now as I saw the living creatures, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, for each of the four faces of it.
16And the appearance of the wheels was as the appearance of beryl: and the four had one likeness: and their work was as it were a wheel in a wheel.
16The appearance of the wheels and their work was like a beryl. The four of them had one likeness. Their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel within a wheel.
17They went on their four sides: they turned not as they went;
17When they went, they went in their four directions. They didn’t turn when they went.
18neither did their backs [turn]: and they were high: and I beheld them, and the backs of them four were full of eyes round about.
18As for their rims, they were high and dreadful; and the four of them had their rims full of eyes all around.
19And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures lifted themselves off the earth, the wheels were lifted off.
19When the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them. When the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
20Wherever the cloud happened to be, there was the spirit ready to go: the wheels went and were lifted up with them; because the spirit of life was in the wheels.
20Wherever the spirit was to go, they went. The spirit was to go there. The wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
21When those went, [the wheels] went; and when those stood, [the wheels] stood; and when those lifted themselves off the earth, they were lifted off with them: for the spirit of life was in the wheels.
21When those went, these went. When those stood, these stood. When those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
22And the likeness over the heads of the living creatures was as a firmament, as the appearance of crystal , spread out over their wings above.
22Over the head of the living creature there was the likeness of an expanse, like an awesome crystal to look at, stretched out over their heads above.
23And their wings were spread out under the firmament, reaching one to the other; two [wings] to each, covering their bodies .
23Under the expanse, their wings were straight, one toward the other. Each one had two which covered on this side, and each one had two which covered their bodies on that side.
24And I heard the sound of their wings when they went, as the sound of much water: and when they stood, their wings were let down .
24When they went, I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters, like the voice of the Almighty, a noise of tumult like the noise of an army. When they stood, they let down their wings.
25And lo! a voice from above the firmament
25There was a voice above the expanse that was over their heads. When they stood, they let down their wings.
26that was over their head, [there was] as the appearance of a sapphire stone, [and] the likeness of a throne upon it: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as an appearance of a man above.
26Above the expanse that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone. On the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man on it above.
27And I saw as it were the resemblance of amber from the appearance of the loins and upwards, and from the appearance of the loins and under I saw an appearance of fire, and the brightness thereof round about.
27I saw as it were glowing metal, as the appearance of fire within it all around, from the appearance of his waist and upward; and from the appearance of his waist and downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him.
28As the appearance of the bow when it is in the cloud in days of rain, so was the form of the brightness round about.
28As the appearance of the rainbow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. This was the appearance of the likeness of Yahweh’s glory. When I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of one that spoke.
1This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And I saw and fell upon my face, and heard the voice of one speaking: and he said to me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak to thee.
1He said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you.”
2And the Spirit came upon me, and took me up, and raised me, and set me on my feet: and I heard him speaking to me.
2The Spirit entered into me when he spoke to me, and set me on my feet; and I heard him who spoke to me.
3And he said to me, Son of man, I send thee forth to the house of Israel, them that provoke me; who have provoked me, they and their fathers, to this day.
3He said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the children of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me even to this very day.
4And thou shalt say to them, Thus saith the Lord .
4The children are impudent and stiff-hearted. I am sending you to them, and you shall tell them, ‘This is what the Lord Yahweh says.’
5Whether then indeed they shall hear or fear, (for it is a provoking house,) yet they shall know that thou art a prophet in the midst of them.
5They, whether they will hear, or whether they will refuse—for they are a rebellious house—yet they will know that there has been a prophet among them.
6And thou, son of man, fear them not, nor be dismayed at their face; (for they will madden and will rise up against thee round about, and thou dwellest in the midst of scorpions): be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their countenance, for it is a provoking house.
6You, son of man, don’t be afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you, and you dwell among scorpions. Don’t be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.
7And thou shalt speak my words to them, whether they will hear or fear: for it is a provoking house.
7You shall speak my words to them, whether they will hear or whether they will refuse; for they are most rebellious.
8And thou, son of man, hear him that speaks to thee; be not thou provoking, as the provoking house: open thy mouth, and eat what I give thee.
8But you, son of man, hear what I tell you. Don’t be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth, and eat that which I give you.”
9And I looked, and behold, a hand stretched out to me, and in it a volume of a book .
9When I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me; and behold, a scroll of a book was in it.
10And he unrolled it before me: and in it the front and the back were written [upon]: and there was written [in it] Lamentation, and mournful song, and woe .
10He spread it before me. It was written within and without; and lamentations, mourning, and woe were written in it.
